New DVD Releases: Week of 11-02-09

New DVD Releases for this week include the live-action G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3, and the sci-fi family adventure Aliens in the Attic along with other theatrical newcomers. There are exciting Anniversary Editions of old favorites,  TV collections new to DVD, some vintage "B" movies from the 1940s and a Claudette Colbert movie collection that includes the very first appearance of Ma and Pa Kettle in The Egg and I.

G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 Buck Rogers (70th Anniversary)

G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra (2009)
Recruited into the international special ops team G.I. Joe, U.S. soldiers Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) must help stop arms dealer James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) from using nanomite warheads to cause global panic and usher in a new world order. Based on the long-running toy line, this exciting actioner also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Dennis Quaid, Arnold Vosloo, and Ray Park as Snake Eyes.

The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)
John Travolta and Denzel Washington square off in director Tony Scott's hyperkinetic do-over of the 1974 suspense classic, with Travolta searing the screen as the leader of an armed gang that hijacks a New York City subway train. When Travolta threatens to kill passengers unless his ransom demands are met, the expert hostage negotiator (John Turturro) turns to dispatcher Washington for help in defeating the wily thug. With Luis Guzman, James Gandolfini.

I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)
Nerdy high school valedictorian Denis (Paul Rust) finally musters up the courage to profess his love for the beautiful and popular Beth Cooper (Hayden Panettiere)--only he does it during his graduation speech. But when Beth shockingly shows up at his house later that night, Denis and his dreamgirl embark on the wildest night of their lives, on the run from Beth's meathead of a boyfriend. Jack Carpenter, Lauren London, Shawn Roberts co-star in this fun-filled teen comedy.

Aliens In The Attic (2009)
Aliens bent on world domination descend on Earth, launching their plan of global conquest in the most obvious of locales--the attic of a remote vacation house in Michigan. With the extra-terrestrials' mind-control device only effective on adults, it's up to a group of kids to stop the invaders and save the planet. Ashley Tisdale, Carter Jenkins, Austin Butler, Kevin Nealon, Doris Roberts, and Andy Richter star in this sci-fi adventure for the whole family.

The Answer Man (2009)
Though the title of his bestselling book "Me and God" might imply an intimate and reliable relationship, Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels) finds himself lacking divine intervention for his physical and spiritual discomforts after serious back pain places him in the care of a chiropractor (Lauren Graham). Can the doctor or her receptionist (Olivia Thirlby) help the guru find some answers of his own? Kat Dennings, Tony Hale co-star.

Not Forgotten (2009)
A prosperous family man living in a Texas border town has his past rudely brought back to life when his young daughter mysteriously vanishes. Because her disappearance opens up a link to his dark, secret past, the distraught father can only call upon the powers of an ancient spiritual protector in the hopes of restoring balance to his life. But will the same mystical force revenge itself upon him for living a lie? Simon Baker, Paz Vega star.

The Claudette Colbert Collection
Claudette Colbert stars as a beautiful young woman who becomes the object of affection for the charming doctor (Richard Arlen) who rents a room in her financially troubled family's home, in "Three-Cornered Moon" (1933). Colbert and Fred MacMurray are free-spirited young lovers who oppose the infamous 17th-century Massachusetts witch hunts, in "Maid of Salem" (1937). An American fashion designer (Colbert) is romanced by a writer (Melvyn Douglas), a playboy (Robert Young), and her hometown boyfriend (Lee Bowman), in "I Met Him in Paris" (1937). "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" (1938) is an Ernst Lubitsch comedy with Gary Cooper as a millionaire who's gone through seven marriages and looks to make French shopgirl Colbert his next bride. A sophisticated and refined reporter (Colbert) has "No Time for Love" (1943) but reluctantly falls for a salt-of-the-earth laborer (MacMurray) anyway. And, city-bred Claudette gets more than she bargained for when she weds chicken farmer Fred and moves to the country, in "The Egg and I" (1947), with Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride as Ma and Pa Kettle.

One Christmas (1995)
Truman Capote's story is set in 1930, where 8-year-old Buddy leaves his cousin's Alabama home to visit his scheming, estranged father in New Orleans for the holidays. Buddy soon realizes his dreams of snow and a visit from Santa may not occur--especially if he and his father don't reach an accord by Christmas Day. Henry Winkler, Katharine Hepburn, Swoosie Kurtz star.

Wings Of Desire (1987)
A hauntingly beautiful tale from German filmmaker Wim Wenders, depicting a black-and-white Berlin as seen through the eyes of angels who pass unnoticed to follow the people they're assigned to watch. Bruno Ganz stars as the seraph who yearns for a taste of humanity after falling for circus performer Solveig Dommartin; with a delightful cameo by Peter Falk.

Buck Rogers (70th Anniversary) (1939)
Emerging from a state of hibernation after 500 years, Buck Rogers (Buster Crabbe) and young Buddy Wade (Jackie Moran) awaken to a world held in a grip of fear by Killer Kane, and must zoom off to the ringed planet for help from the Saturnians. Co-stars Constance Moore, Anthony Warde. This is a Saturday matinee serial in 12 chapters.

North By Northwest (50th Anniversary Edition) (1959)
Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant teamed up for the fourth and final time in this suspenser that is a landmark moment in American cinema. Grant portrays a Manhattan ad exec who is framed for murder and thrust into a world of espionage. Along the way, he finds himself chased by criminals, sharing a sleeping berth with Eva Marie Saint, dusted by a crop plane, and on top of Mount Rushmore. James Mason, Leo G. Carroll, Martin Landau co-star.

White Christmas (Anniversary Edition) (1954)
Timeless holiday classic stars Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye as a pair of merry veterans who become famous song-and-dance men after World War II. Soon, the duo joins forces with singing sisters Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen to help save their former army general's Vermont inn. Beloved Irving Berlin score includes "Blue Skies," "Sisters," "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," the title track, and more. This year, Paramount Pictures is commemorating the 55th anniversary of this classic.

The Rolling Stones: Live At The Max (1991)
Even if you don't have a five-story IMAX movie screen in your home, you'll still enjoy this maxed-out concert film, shot during the European leg of The Stones' 1990 Steel Wheels Tour. Jagger, Richards, Wyman, Watts, and Wood cut loose with rock anthems like "Start Me Up," "Tumbling Dice," "Paint It Black," "Street Fighting Man," and other classics.

Walt Disney Treasures: Zorro: The Complete First Season (1957)
"Out of the night, when the full moon is bright" comes the mysterious masked hero of 19th-century Spanish California, in this fondly remembered Disney TV series on ABC from 1957-59. All 39 episodes from the first season are collected in a six-disc set.

Walt Disney Treasures: Zorro: The Complete Second Season (1958)
This TV series first aired on ABC from 1957-59. Guy Williams starred as the foppish Don Diego de la Vega and his sword-wielding alter ego, Zorro, who left his trademark "Z" all over the countryside while battling the forces of evil. All 39 episodes from the second season are collected in a six-disc set.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: The Complete Season One (2008)
Picking up where the 2008 feature "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" left off, this computer-animated series chronicles the legendary battles of Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Yoda, and Mace Windu. All 22 episodes from the first season are collected in this four-disc set.

Blazing Six Shooters (1940)
An ambitious ranch foreman (Dick Curtis) attempts to acquire neighboring properties after discovering both ranches could be made into prosperous silver mines. Only one noble young man (Charles Starrett) stands ready to thwart the foreman's unscrupulous plans...but, will he be able to outwit such a desperate and crafty villain? Romantic western co-stars Iris Meredith, Al Bridge, and Henry Hall.

Hit The Hay (1945)
When the owners of a struggling opera company discover a farm girl they believe will draw crowds, they make plans to put her on the stage as their new star under false pretenses. Before you can say "Singin' in the Rain," one of the company's divas threatens to expose their plan to the public. Delightful musical comedy stars Judy Canova, Ross Hunter, and Fortunio Bonanova.
