I think "GrownUps" would be my favorite summer movie and top Comedy of them all! Only one flaw in it and that was the repetition of the 'pump using' scenes. Too many and the laughs stopped in the theatre. CarolMarie
It just doesn't get any better than Newman and Woodward in "The Long Hot Summer." Not only was this where the lovebirds began their affair which lasted over the decades but filming on location in the sultry Louisiana backwoods outside of Baton Rouge didnd't hurt one little bit. And don't forget Orson Welles as Will Varner, the ham-fisted boss of Frenchman's Bend, cowing the weakling son, played to perfection by a sweaty Tony Franciosa. Watching the film for the umpteenth time still makes me feel nostalgic for my East Texas roots but you can have the humidity for another day.
Endless Summer , a great movie about a time when it was easy to be free go around the world and surf.Todays much more complicated world with pirates , terrorist and repressesive regimes has taken away much of that time of innocence which is a good reason to watch this film even if you don't surf for the nostalgia of the times.
not on the poll, but the absolute perfect summer movies include -
Gidget and Summer School
"The Summer of '42" will always be my favorite summer movie, but I also liked "Marjorie Morningstar" with Gene Kelly and Natalie Wood - it was a good movie about summer romance and the consequences of same.
What about Suddenly Last Summer with Elizabeth Taylor and Katherine Hepburn. Not a romance or comedy, but wonderful acting!
Long Hot Summer - really holds your attention -
Not quite sure what the poll is - just movies with Summer eh? Well these aren't my favorites.
First time I saw Endless - I felt as though I was on the trek myself - the long-lens worked magic.
Since you are having a movie poll on "summer" movies, why aren't you listing all of them? You only simply need to look in your catalog.
my favorite summer movie is Picnic. Is there a sexier scene
Than William Holden and a gorgeous Kim Novak dancing together to the theme song on a sultry Labor day evening in
Indiana? Classic themes and fantastic acting!
I agree with Lois that Suddenly Last Summer should have at least got a mention. It was, I think, Montgomery Clift's finest performance in movies because I gather is was the closest to his own real life?
Oldies but goodies Summer movies - Cat On A Hot Ten Roof. Paul and Elizabeth sizzled on the screen together. There is not a single actor or actress in that movie that didn't "stand out". And let's not forget Night of the Hunter! CM
I could say a "A Summer Place". However, the movie was rather dire but redeemed by Percy Faith and the immortal "Theme from a Summer Place".
Endless Summer is a movie I can watch anytime of the year and get the same enjoyment from.
Assuming you meant movies with "summer" in the title, again a favorite was overlooked. "Summer Magic" with Burl Ives. Good, clean family musical.
On your list, my vote went to "Summer Stock". A by-the-book musical but with a great cast. "Summer of '42" was the also ran.
Without "summer" in the title how could one overlook "Mr. Hulot's Holiday"?
"Summer Lovers" (1982) with Daryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher. Hot, hot, HOT!!
I think that "Summer of 42" with it's haunting music and the innocence of the time, made it a great summer coming of age movie.
Picnic has my vote. I agree with Judy about the dance scene - the best!
What about "CaddyShack".It doesn't seem right watching it in the winter as it does in the summer. "Summer Lovers" was a garbage movie but the scenes of the Greek Islands can't be beat. After seeing it I wanted to hope on the plane to Santorini.
Summer Magic. Wonderful, still enjoyable family film--I love to hear Burl Ives sing "Ugly Bug Ball."
Frank Perry's LAST SUMMER, from the novel by Evan Hunter. Not the most upbeat movie ever made, but very engaging.
