how could you have left off The Green Mile? I voted for A league of There Own. I believe Hanks made that movie, cause there had to be some comedy relief in it.

    There's no crying in baseball.
    Great line!!
    I play golf.
    "There's no crying in golf.

You omitted "Nothing in Common". A very long movie but Hanks' David Basner is superb as Jackie Gleason & Eva Marie Saint's son, Hector Elizondo's subordinate, and Sela Ward's lover!

TH played Pep Streebeck as a loveable loon and was a great sidekick to Dan Ackroyd's stoic Joe Friday. "Dragnet" itself was an underrated comedy film.

  • Randolph Nesseler

TH played Pep Streebeck as a loveable loon. He was a fine sidekick to Dan Ackroy's stoic loon, Joe Friday in the zany "Dragnet" parody. "Dragnet" itself is a very underrated comedy film.

For my money...truly underrated...it's Joe in "Joe vs. the Volcano".

  • Mario Brescio

I would have voted for his character David Basner in "Nothing In Common" with Jackie Gleason!!!

  • David Byrne

I really enjoyed his performance in "The Money Pit",which must be REALLY overlooked because no one has even mentioned it!!!

  • Eric Sinkkonen

What about "Castaway" talk about carrying a movie by yourself (and a volley ball).

  • Cyber Mom

I agree with the others, "Nothing in Commom" is my favorite and would have gotten my vote.

Speaking of underrated acting-adventure, Every Time We Say Goodbye is definitely one to check out.

  • Pat

I, too, vote for "Everytime We Say Goodbye".

  • Barry Monush

"Nothing in Common" is definitely Hanks' most underrated performance (and film, for that matte). The final line and Hanks' reaction is one of the great endings in any 1980's movie.

  • Dave Manning

Saving Privaten Ryan. End of story.

  • rickeysays

Apparently I'm the only one who thinks Punchline was a really good movie and Hanks was great in it (although Sally Field was even better).

  • Ken

What about Turner and Hooch? and BIG? The Green Mile? This guy is the Fredrick March of our time!

  • james

The scene Tom was in playing Capt. John Miller in "Saving Private Ryan" where he walks to the other side of the enemy pillbox after the intense firefight that kills his one squad member (i.e., the medic played by Giovani Ribisi)where he has a short mental breakdown (said to have been done in 1 take) was undoubtedly his most underrated performance, BUT I don't see it as one of the choices above!!!!

  • keith

How could you leave out his role in "Saving Private Ryan" which so many of our fathers, uncles, cousins, brothers and British allies can relate to. Which happened to many dedicated U.S. Army, Navy & British troops.

  • Holly

    My name is Forrest....Forrest Gump.

  • Richard Finn

I don't know what you mean by underrated performance. TH's performanace in Forrest Gump won him an Oscar, the 2nd after Philadelphia the previous year. I believe in Saving Private Ryan, TH's performance was also considered, but I suspect the members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences determined that they had to find another group outside TH. I voted for Road to Perdition, as TH had a much larger role than in A League of Their Own. But others are correct, in that his performance in the latter was phenomonal.

  • Roger Z

Not sure what was meant by 'underrated' but I voted for League of Their Own because it's my favorite out of this batch. The maturing of Jimmy Dugan throughout the movie was portrayed masterfully by Hanks.

  • Jackie

I agree with Eric and Mike! The Green Mile and Castaway should not have been left out...A fine performance as always by Hanks!

  • Pat

"Every Time We Say Goodbye". This movie isn't shown much. Under rated film all the way.
