Fellini's "La Dolce Vita". Acclaimed, at the time, as the best and most sensational foreign film of all time, it wasn't nominated for a '61 Oscar because of a technicality- the movie had been released in Europe a year earlier. It was nominated in four categories, including best director, and won one for costume design (dazzling!). It wasn't nominated, however, in the one category where it shines like few others before or after, music. Nino Rota's haunting score is the single best element in this sensational film.

I might be wrong,but I think to qualify as Best Foreign Film, it has to be a non English speaking film. This would eliminate some of the English films mentioned above.

King of Hearts (1966/1967) was a wonderful film!! I agree with other who have mentioned Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources as well.

This Sporting Life with Richard Harris and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning with Albert Finney both deserve a place on the list.

I agree that Jean de Florette and it's follow up film Manon of the Spring are two that should be considered but also Chocolat. I would also like to see a few comedies represented, La Cage au Folle and an a couple of the old Alec Guiness movies like The Lady Killers and Kind Hearts and Coronets.
