Tough Girls of the Movies

If you're Collecting Movie Classics (and you already know which are the best Movie Bombs to put in your library), you're going to want to make space on your shelves not just for John Wayne (take the poll to choose your favorite), Clint (check out Clint's underrated movies), Bond (especially the sixth 007), Bogie (the stuff that dreams are made of), Bronson (yes, he made these awesome commercials), Rambo, and any number of other "Real Man" outings...but also for those cinema treasures that celebrate the strength, sass, and staying power of the—ahem—"fairer" sex.

We're talking about Thelma & Louise. We're talking about Fargo. And, we're talking about Foxy Brown. Yes, we're talking about unforgettable movies starring tough women. Underestimate these hardy gals at your peril:

I am in agreement with these picks especially Barbara Stanwyck. There may be one or two I'd wanna include but ten was the number.

  • Dave Shehan

Betty Field in Blues in the night
    Ann Savage-Detour

  • Gary Vidmar

A lot of good choices already made, but let us never forget the epitome of tough chicks in the toughest babe show of the last century:
Tura Satana in FASTER PUSSYCAT, KILL! KILL!

  • http://www.moviesunlimited.com George D. Allen

It is indeed difficult to top Satana and "Faster, Pussycat!" In fact, that was originally slated to be one of Irv's picks, until he subbed in "Double Indemnity" at the last minute. I think he may be deliberately holding back all babes Russ Meyer for a possible special tribute in the future...('cause they really are in a category of their own, aren't they?)

  • Gary Vidmar

For Jim Rick: DESERT FURY is available in a splendid color dvd from Australia. It's all-region PAL, if that will work for you.

  • James Gasaway

    Glenda Farrell as Torchy Blaine...

  • SteveinSedona

Michelle Rodriguez in just about anything

  • John mulrenin

Ann Dvorak in the original "Scarface"!

  • llsee

I pick Jennifer Lawrence in "Winter's Bone". This is a tough girl, without pretense. She takes care of her family, saves the family home, tracks down her missing father even though the local crime boss' family doesn't want him found. There's that scene in the barn, after the family women beat her up, when they ask if she'll stop looking and she says "guess you'll have to kill me!" Great movie, super strong female lead!

Irv's a big "Winter's Bone" fan, too. And I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed the sass of Michelle Rodriguez in "Machete."

  • BRIAN

    Ann Sheridan in Dodge City
    Ann Blyth in Mildred Pierce
    ida Lupino in Womens Prison
    Jan Sterling in Split Second

  • Gord Jackson

Again, as per my film noir post, Claire Trevor in "Murder My Sweet" and also Peggy Cummins in "Gun Crazy".

  • Andrew

    Hands down:
Sigourney Weaver and Jenette Goldstein as Ellen Ripley and Pvt. Vasquez in "Aliens".
    Simply Bad A____!

  • Anne

Definitely Michelle Rodriguez...and llsee is so right about Jennifer Lawrence! Third place goes to Babs Stanwyck. Sigourney Weaver in Alien - always.

  • BRIAN

Natille Wood in Rebel Without A Cause(1955)

  • Gerald R Rotter

Jessica Lang as Frances Farmer: once and former Hollywood star. There is a shot in court of the diagram showing the path the probe will travel into her brain since she will not change her attitude towards people who have power over her.

  • Anonymous.

They never made a movie about her but no one is tougher than my wife!

  • Al

Ida Lupino in any of her noir films
