Jean Harlow 100th Anniversary Collection: Movie Irv Reviews the Set

She made her credited feature film debut (as “Party Guest” in director Lewis Milestone's 1929 crime drama New York Nights) at the age of 18; she was tragically gone forever at the age of 26—but, in the years between, “blonde bombshell” Jean Harlow did much to secure one of cinema’s most enduring screen legacies.

Much-requested films starring the beloved actress make their appearance now with the Jean Harlow: 100th Anniversary Collection. Let’s check in with Movie Irv as he gives you a précis on the treats now in store for classic movie collectors:

Happy Birthday HARLOW! I just started watching this set and it's about as great a retrospective of Jean Harlow as one could want. She was indeed an extraordinary sexpot! This set definitely legitimizes the dvd-r, on-demand format for me.

The 60's produced two abominable biopics, one was a cheapie with Efram Zimbalist in 'Electronovision', the other starred Carol Baker, the best feature being Angela Lansbury and musical score. Like Monroe, she was underrated, both were savvy in business. Two scenes come to mind; Howard Hughes' "Hell's Angels": 'Would be shocked if I put on something more comfotable?', in two strip Technicolor; "Dinner at Eight", 'I was reading a book the other day...', Marie Dressler (she was reigning queen at MGM) delivered the classic line, ' My dear,you..'

Just finished watching the Jean Harlow set. Loved every film. My only regret is that two of Jean's films with Clark Gable have still not been released on DVD. They are Red Dust and Hold Your Man. I hope that they will be released soon. Harlow was not only lovely but a far better actress than people think. In Saratoga it is intersting to note the scenes where Mary Dee fills in for Jean and Paula Winslowe dubs her voice.

Nice to see Harlow's catalog available...she was no doubt a one-of-a-kind lady who just radiated sensuality (no other way to describe it!), but also had great comedic chops, as well as dramatic. I have become a big fan of hers over the last few years...one of my favorites of hers is 'Red-Headed Woman'...the movie itself is not 'top notch', but she is hilarious in it! It's so sad she left us way too early.

It would have been killer to see her in a film along with Ginger (heck, they could have played sisters!)... speaking of which (as I always do) - The Harlow box is wickedawesome, but NOW how about that OTHER 'Girl From Missouri' getting a century box with 'new' ones, like 'Vivacious Lady', 'In Person', '20 Million Sweethearts', 'Star of Midnight', to name a few?

    Just askin'... :-)

AND, as J.I. mentioned above, the '65 Harlow bio made with Zimbalist WAS pretty rough, but it did have Ginger in it as Harlow's ma, 'Mama Jean'...she did a pretty fair job of it, and it would mark Ginger's final film appearance.

    Keep It Gingery! AND Harlow-like!

This sounds like a really good set. Also, be sure to see "Libeled Lady" with her, Spencer Tracy, William Powell, and Myrna Loy. All the stars and a hilarious movie. By the way, I first watched on Youtube and then ordered it in the mail.
