I chose Sugar only because it was the one role in my opinion they didn’t portray her as being “totally” stupid.

In All About Eve MM in the small role of Miss Caswell from the Copa, is interesting, not only because you can’t take your eyes off of her, but she holds her own in the company of George Sanders! And in the kitchen scene Miss Caswell has made drunk Margo Channing very jealous of her.

Her as “Vicki” in There’s no Business like Show Business has to be included because of her “Heat Wave” and “After you get what you want you don’t want it” routines.

  • Wayne P.

I would have to select Niagara because she acted very well in a much more substantative part than the usual “eye-candy” comedy/musicals we were used to seeing so much of her in (in more ways than one;)! This movie was a good suspenser and a fine role for her, much like The Misfits would be to wrap up her short and tragic film career.

A faultlessly sophisticated lengthy performance, really astonishing.

“Some Like It Hot” is the only movie of Marilyn Monroe that I have in my Classic Collection. She was very good in most all of her films but this on is my favorite including the performances of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon. The casting was fabuilous and the film highly entertaining.

My second favorite is a tie between the top 3 so far (Sugar, Lorelei, and The Girl,) but my very favorite performance has to go to Other because How To Marry a Millionaire is not listed here. She is at the top of her game in a smaller role (not small, but not the lead), but she stands just as tall in her performance as Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable. A very funny movie!

I think people voted more for the film than Marilyn’s performance, though she’s fabulous in Some Like It Hot, a definite favorite and a marvelous movie. I think her acting was actually better in Bus Stop, my vote, and she’s amazing in The Misfits. I love Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, too. I’m definitely a fan.

  • Linda M

I love Marilyn. Some Like it Hot is my favorite movie of hers, but I have to say that I thought she was most vulnerable in Bus Stop and the Misfits, and I think that she’s adorable in Monkey Business although it’s just a small role.

I think “Niagara” and “The Misfits” are about the only films that Marilyn got to play any sort of substantial role. She was the devious wife conspiring with her lover as Rose and the woman who thought she could change Gable as Roslyn. Not too much dumb blonde acting in either role. I felt more drawn to her in these two films actually listening to her character and seeing past the exterior, which did have its part, but wasn’t the only thing we saw.

  • Lorraine M.

Of all her roles the performance that resonates the most for me is Roslyn in “The Misfits.” Wonderfully complex, nuanced work, and revealing of her real-life struggles. She matches the towering, world-weary Gable note for note.

As a big fan of Marilyn, I enjoy almost all movies that she acted in. My two (2) favorite movies of hers, in which her acting was so dramatically different, is 1. Niagara and 2. Don’t Bother to Knock. The latter, starring Richard Widmark, was excellent. It is a great movie if you want to see Marilyn out of her “comfort” zone. She does an outstanding job. She should be more known for this role. (In my opinion). She deserved more critcal acclaim than she ever recieved when she was alive. It’s a shame……. just think of what the future could have held for her if she had lived and made movies for another 30, 40, or 50 years. We can only guess and imagine.

    “Happy Birthday, Mr. President”

  • Kurkura

For me, it’d have to be LOVE HAPPY. A rather sad Marx Brothers comedy, she lit up her scene
like a blazing torch in a dark room.

  • Richard

My next favourite would have been Niagara.

The Prince and the Showgirl was not the greatest movie in the world, but I’ve seen it several times on TCM of late and was astounded by the depth of Marilyn’s performance in that one so I went with that one. My favorite movies in which she performs, however, are The River of No Return and Niagara. I had often heard that her role in “Bus Stop” was phenomenal although I felt it was substandard for her and of course her comedic work in “Some Like It Hot” was dead on.

  • Lee

She was completely charming in How to Marry a Millionaire, perfect role for her.

  • James Howard

I like Marilyn like I do Denzell Washngton, when whe works outside her comfort zone. I thought she was great in River as well as The Misfits. Dencell, by they way, did his best work in Courage Under Fire and Antwone Fisher. Just sayin.

  • Knorr08

I loved River of No Return. I don’t believe she gets enough credit for all she went through to make the movie and how she performed in it.

  • Richard Mulhaupt

I always loved her in “Monkey Business” especially when as his secretary she asked Charles Colburn if she could type the letter he wanted and he told her no, send it out.

  • SLH

Other, How to Marry a Millionaire.

I liked her in “How To Marry A Millionaire”, where she wore glasses around her girlfriends, but the minute a man walked into the room, she would take them off and be blind as a bat, bumping into anyone or anything.

I liked Marilyn, but she was not a great actress, she was pretty. But my fav movies, were Niagara, Some like it hot, 7 yr. itch (loved her actor partner), Prince and the showgirl,

Yes I also liked How to marry a Millionare, I agree w/ you kp22kc

  • dirkwrestler

NIAGARA was a great performance, but DON’T BOTHER TO KNOCK with Richard Widmark wasn’t even listed. I liked Miss Casswell from ALL ABOUT EVE (why do they always look like hungry rabbits?) but eventually voted for SOME LIKE IT HOT for its Iconic Value!

  • Alice

I voted for Niagara because her role wasn’t about her beauty or her sexiness. It was about her passion for her lover and her loathing of her husband and she was great in the movie. Also, the camera and lighting on her close-ups shows her great beauty in a breathtaking way (which has nothing to do with her acting, it’s just an aside on my part).

  • Jane Kelly

My favorite is How to Marry a Millionaire! She was just funny!

  • Nina McFadden

I voted for Some Like it Hot because it’s the first classic movie I bought on DVD and my all time favourite.
