A hit song can do the work of 100 publicists and can make people curious about a film. In early November 1992 \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d from the film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/bodyguard-1992-the-bodyguard\/085393366629?_gl=1%2A7vk3zj%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Bodyguard<\/em><\/a> was released as a single ahead of the movie\u2019s premiere. The Dolly Parton-penned song, sung by leading lady Whitney Houston, became the number one song in the country just as the film was being released in theaters. Despite many unfavorable reviews for the movie, which also starred Kevin Costner, it became a huge hit. As did the soundtrack, becoming the best-selling soundtrack of all time.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t the first time a movie soundtrack helped propel a movie into box office gold. There was Barbra Streisand\u2019s version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/a-star-is-born\/085393353629?_gl=1%2Aaa3t3s%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>A Star is Born<\/em><\/a> that went quadruple platinum in 1976 and gave her a second Academy Award for writing the love theme from the movie, \u201cEvergreen,\u201d with Paul Williams. In 1977 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/saturday-night-fever-directors-cut\/032429257987?_gl=1*1k9srhi*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Saturday Night Fever<\/em><\/a> starring John Travolta was released. Also released earlier was the disco soundtrack to the film, heavy on Bee Gees tunes. Travolta became a phenomenon, and the album became the best-selling album of all time until Michael Jackson\u2019s &#8220;Thriller&#8221; came along. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/footloose-1984-footloose\/032429256874?_gl=1%2Ab4akwv%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Footloose<\/em><\/a>, the 1984 &#8220;no dancing allowed&#8221; drama with Kevin Bacon, charted six top 40 hits with two reaching number one on the Billboard chart. Let\u2019s hear it for the boy and the music.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58504\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/MFF-WIZARD-OF-OZ.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/MFF-WIZARD-OF-OZ.png 700w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/MFF-WIZARD-OF-OZ-300x161.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the first hit songs from a film was \u201cOver the Rainbow,\u201d sung by Judy Garland in 1939&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/wizard-of-oz-75th-anniversary-the-wizard-of-oz-75th-anniversary\/883929405350?_gl=1%2A1jfxen5%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em><\/a>. It reached number five on the Billboard chart and is still a staple today in many singers\u2019 repertoires. The Oscar-winning \u2018\u2019When You Wish Upon a Star\u201d from the 1940 Disney animated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/pinocchio-pinocchio\/786936853063?_gl=1%2A1jfxen5%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Pinocchio<\/em><\/a> also did well and was a million-selling record for Cliff Edwards (Jiminy Cricket). In 1942 Dooley Wilson sang \u201cAs Time Goes By\u201d in the Bogart classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/casablanca-70th-anniversary-casablanca\/883929243716?_gl=1%2Adxb2z5%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Casablanca<\/em><\/a> and it became a hit. I remember hearing the theme from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/exodus-1960-exodus\/027616880154?_gl=1%2A1pkrze7%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Exodus<\/em><\/a> playing downstairs while I was supposedly sleeping upstairs. This tradition continued with Henry Mancini\u2019s \u201cMoon River\u201d from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/breakfast-at-tiffanys\/032429256454?_gl=1*1f2z12c*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Breakfast at Tiffany&#8217;s<\/em><\/a>. \u201cA Summer Place\u201d by Percy Faith, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/summer-place-a-summer-place\/085392888726?_gl=1%2A1f2z12c%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">teen angst flick<\/a> of the same name, was another. No wonder I\u2019m a light sleeper. And what was up with their love of instrumentals?<\/p>\n<p>The right song can set the mood in a movie and elevate a scene. Who didn\u2019t want to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/shaft-4-film-collection\/883929695683?_gl=1*odh2qi*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Shaft<\/em><\/a> after hearing Isaac Hayes&#8217; percolating rhythms and that risqu\u00e9 (for the time) lyric in his theme for the movie? Look at the pottery scene in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/ghost-ghost\/032429257024?_gl=1%2A1ax7msm%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Ghost<\/em><\/a> with \u201cUnchained Melody\u201d by The Righteous Brothers playing, or Joni Mitchell\u2019s \u201cBoth Sides, Now\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/love-actually-love-actually\/025192329326?_gl=1%2Ajnwheg%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Love Actually<\/em><\/a>. For inspiration, \u201cGonna Fly Now,\u201d the theme from Sylvester Stallone\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/rocky\/027616915139?_gl=1*ofxwvf*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rocky<\/a>,<\/em> does the trick. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/rocky-4-film-collection\/883904321101?_gl=1*ofxwvf*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Rocky III<\/em><\/a> Survivor\u2019s \u201cEye of the Tiger\u201d continued the trend. Dolly Parton\u2019s \u201c9 to 5\u201d perfectly explains the message of its eponymous workplace comedy.<\/p>\n<p>Even a nun got into the act with the chart-topping song \u201cDominique\u201d from the Debbie Reynolds starrer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/singing-nun-the-singing-nun\/883316379295?_gl=1%2A136ny02%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Singing Nun<\/em><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/dirty-dancing-dirty-dancing\/012236146995?_gl=1%2A136ny02%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Dirty Dancing<\/em><\/a> produced \u201c(I\u2019ve Had) The Time of My Life&#8221;(Oscar winner). Carly Simon gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/working-girl-working-girl\/024543013662?_gl=1%2A128f36n%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Working Girl<\/em><\/a> the rousing \u201cLet the River Run\u201d and was rewarded with a Golden Globe as well as the Academy Award (In her Ocar acceptance speech she thanked second husband James Hart for giving her a few lines for the song. I always thought his name should have been on it as a co-writer then). Bruce Springsteen won an Oscar for the haunting \u201cStreets of Philadelphia\u201d from Jonathan Demme&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/philadelphia-philadelphia\/043396526198?_gl=1%2Asbewgx%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>\u00a0Philadelphia<\/em><\/a>. One of his competitors that year was Neil Young, who also wrote a beautiful song for the film. Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O\u2019Connell earned two Oscars for their compositions for the James Bond flick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/no-time-to-die\/883929816637?_gl=1*sbewgx*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>No Time to Die<\/em><\/a> and the megahit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/barbie-barbie\/883929801831?_gl=1%2A10upzfc%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Barbie<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Broadway composer and certified genius Stephen Sondheim penned \u201cSooner or Later\u201d for Madonna to sing in Warren Beatty\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/dick-tracy-dick-tracy\/717951005298?_gl=1%2A10upzfc%2A_up%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Dick Tracy<\/em><\/a> and took home the gold. Imagine <em>Say Anything<\/em> without Peter Gabriel\u2019s \u201cIn Your Eyes.&#8221; It\u2019s an integral part of the story. \u201cStuck in the Middle with You\u201d by Stealers Wheel enhanced <em>Reservoir Dogs<\/em>. The same with Elton John\u2019s \u201cTiny Dancer\u201d in <em>Almost Famous<\/em>. Queen\u2019s \u201cBohemian Rhapsody\u201d was utilized in <em>Wayne\u2019s World<\/em> to great comedic effect. In Stanley Kubrick\u2019s <em>A Clockwork Orange.<\/em> the cheerful \u201cSingin\u2019 in the Rain\u201d is used as lead character Alex (Malcom McDowell) violently assaults people.
