At least it used to be. Who knows what&#8217;s going on with those darn kids today?<\/p>\n<p>As for me, I have very particular memories of first experiencing works branded \u201cNo One Under 17 Admitted Without Parent or Guardian\u201d as a big deal on the big screen.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I not only remember seeing my first R-rated movie, I remember my first <em>three<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cable was around (and we had it) when I was a kid, but not cable as we understand it today, with hundreds upon hundreds of channels. I had the experience of those primitive multi-channel boxes: 12 push buttons in the center, one dial to the left to move you up and down between three levels. So: 36 channels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/vintage-cable-tv-box.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16374\" title=\"vintage cable tv box\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/vintage-cable-tv-box.jpg\" width=\"281\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(That <em>still<\/em> seems like more than enough channels to me, but I am already revealing too much about my age without sounding crotchety, so let\u2019s just move on.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/r_rated_movies\/rated-r-dirty-harry-the-enforcer\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37473\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-37473\" alt=\"rated-r-dirty-harry-the-enforcer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-dirty-harry-the-enforcer.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-dirty-harry-the-enforcer.jpg 275w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-dirty-harry-the-enforcer-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a>Before crossing the barrier between PG and R in a movie theater (nope, no PG-13 around when that happened for me), I had certainly already \u201cseen\u201d some R-rated fare on cable. Meaning, Mom always rushed to cover my eyes during the offending scenes. One moment that stands out for me in this regard is a scene from the third Dirty Harry picture, <em><a title=\"The Enforcer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D26537&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Enforcer<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the film, Harry\u2019s chasing People\u2019s Revolutionary Strike Force bomber Henry Lee Caldwell across a San Francisco rooftop when the luckless militant falls through a skylight and smack into the midst of the action of a porno movie production. Harry jumps down to continue the chase and plows through the room, barely (ha) acknowledging the naked people scrambling around him.<\/p>\n<p>My mother always figured her hand went up in front of my face just in time. Why would I bother\u00a0convincing her otherwise?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s another memory I have of Cablevision Carnality that I will have to clear up someday because I haven\u2019t seen the film in such a long, long time: I have a very strong, if completely fuzzy, recollection of seeing buttocks bared in extreme closeup&#8230;and, before I&#8217;d done a little reading to check my facts and discovered it was not rated R, I was <em>certain<\/em> it was\u00a0the counterculture classic <a title=\"Billy Jack\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/findresults_title_smart.asp?search=Billy+Jack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Billy Jack<\/em><\/a>. The memory sticks out for me because I distinctly recall being alone in the house when I was watching it, whatever it was\u2014\u201cHBO will show this feature only at night\u201d was gravely intoned before the start of such forbidden fare\u2014which made the images feel all the more scandalous to me. Even now, my mind pictures that square TV screen filled side-to-side with enormous cheeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/HBO-Rated-R-Disclaimer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16370\" title=\"HBO-Rated-R-Disclaimer\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/HBO-Rated-R-Disclaimer-300x192.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/HBO-Rated-R-Disclaimer-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/HBO-Rated-R-Disclaimer.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One day I mean to revisit the film to see if my recollection is correct, but I have a feeling I may have either a) the wrong film or b) a memory magnified to outrageous proportions, the result of some kind of guilt over my youthful indiscretion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/dracula_1979.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16357\" title=\"dracula_1979\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/dracula_1979-227x300.jpg\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/dracula_1979-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/dracula_1979.jpg 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><\/a>I was well\u00a0shy of\u00a0the age of 17, though, when my parents decided it was safe to usher me through the ticket booth to see my very first R-rated film: the 1979 remake of <em><a title=\"Dracula\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D12049&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dracula<\/a>. <\/em>I remember being so excited about the possibility of seeing it that I would call the box office over and over again just\u00a0to listen to the theater\u2019s recorded message, where they would announce the title, the screening times, and a little sound bite from the trailer. In this case, the movie theater was Newark, Delaware\u2019s <a title=\"Cinema Center 3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cinemacenter3.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cinema Center 3<\/a> (it still exists, the sole theater still standing from my childhood), and I can picture that deep voice on the answering machine\u00a0that sent chills of anticipation up and down my spine after the wolf howl:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDracula. <em>Rated R.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the night came, I was given a final choice to make: <em>Are you sure? Here\u2019s your choice: We can see Dracula\u2026or\u2026The Muppet Movie. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>You look back and realize: parents <em>do<\/em> have a sense of humor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/r_rated_movies\/rated-r-dracula-1979-frank-langellla-kate-nelligan-alien-chest-burster\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37471\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-37471\" alt=\"rated-r-dracula-1979-frank-langellla-kate-nelligan-alien-chest-burster\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-dracula-1979-frank-langellla-kate-nelligan-alien-chest-burster.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-dracula-1979-frank-langellla-kate-nelligan-alien-chest-burster.jpg 350w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-dracula-1979-frank-langellla-kate-nelligan-alien-chest-burster-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>So, OK, as far as R-rated movies go, director John Badham&#8217;s film turned out to be rather mild in terms of its content. You didn\u2019t have nudity, but you had Kate Nelligan wearing a pretty revealing nightgown during a steamy, pre-bite makeout session with Count <a title=\"Frank Langella\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/findresults_actor_smart.asp?search=Frank+Langella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Frank Langella<\/a>\u2014photographed from some tantalizing angles; you\u00a0saw a neck-snapping dispatch of Renfield far more\u00a0ghastly than you were used to seeing on Saturday afternoons when the Lugosi classic <a title=\"Remembering Dr. Shock\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/staff-notes\/let-there-be-fright-remembering-dr-shock\/\" target=\"_blank\">aired on Dr. Shock<\/a>; and, finally, you had quite a violent twist at the climax that did a decent job of shocking me as a longtime Dracula fan well acquainted with the details of the\u00a0book.<\/p>\n<p>(I won\u2019t reveal it here in case someone out there may not be aware of it)<\/p>\n<p>The monster movie <em><a title=\"Alien\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=B52033&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alien<\/a><\/em> was the next R I racked up as a youngster. Obviously, my parents figured taking me to R-rated horror films would be \u201csafer\u201d than, say, taking me to see <em>Caligula<\/em>\u2014but nobody was prepared for how strong \u201cthat\u201d scene in the early going would be. Mom was too busy screaming to cover my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Again, here we\u2019re talking about a film light on sexual content\u2014we\u2019re always more squeamish about sex than violence here in the U.S. (as I pointed out with my video store war story in <a title=\"What's Taboo in the Movies Today?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/staff-notes\/whats-taboo-in-the-movies-today\/\" target=\"_blank\">What\u2019s Taboo in the Movies Today?<\/a>)\u2014but heavy on disturbing amounts of gore and goo. I believe I was fairly well wigged out by Ian Holm&#8217;s milky demise.<\/p>\n<p>It was only a matter of time, however, before I would cross that particular ratings rubicon, and my Tour of Titillation will now climax\u2014<em>ahem<\/em>\u2014with a reminiscence of my parents taking me to the drive-in to see the John Boorman flick <em><a title=\"Excalibur\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/findresults_title_smart.asp?search=Excalibur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Excalibur<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/excalibur-uther-igrayne.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16369\" title=\"excalibur-uther-igrayne\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/excalibur-uther-igrayne.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/excalibur-uther-igrayne.jpg 500w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/excalibur-uther-igrayne-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, <em>now<\/em> we\u2019re talking!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/r_rated_movies\/rated-r-excalibur-gabriel-byrne-katrine-boorman-lovemaking\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37472\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-37472\" alt=\"rated-r-excalibur-gabriel-byrne-katrine-boorman-lovemaking\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-excalibur-gabriel-byrne-katrine-boorman-lovemaking.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"791\" \/><\/a>Maybe Mom and Dad thought I\u2019d fall asleep before the film started\u2014like the time I fell asleep at the drive-in the first time they took me to see <em>Jaws<\/em> (sadists both,\u00a0they returned me\u00a0to a movie theater to see it again, where I not only stayed awake, but was so traumatized by it I was nervous about going into the swimming pool, forget about the ocean)\u2014but I was alert enough to get really squirmy during the film&#8217;s extravagantly explicit\u00a0opening minutes.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s just no way around it, it\u2019s beyond odd watching sex scenes in the company of your parents\u2026no matter how old you get. But in <em>Excalibur<\/em>, we\u2019re not just talking about your run-of-the-mill lovemaking. No, we\u2019re talking about a truly bizarre coupling brought to us by Boorman, the same <em>auteur<\/em> who gave us the charming backwoods rumpy-pumpy of <em>Deliverance:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When Excalibur-wielding king Uther Pendragon (Gabriel Byrne) convinces Merlin (Nicol Williamson) to help him satisfy his lusts and bed Igrayne (Katrine Boorman), wife to the Duke of Cornwall (Corin Redgrave), he does so by having the wizard transform him into the\u00a0spitting image\u00a0of her husband, who is busy getting killed conducting a raid on Uther\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n<p>Cornwall is gruesomely impaled; his daughter senses the death of her father, but look, Igrayne says, <em>there\u2019s<\/em> your father, back from battle! Thanks to Merlin\u2019s magic, she\u2019s unaware it\u2019s Uther, who rips off her flimsy nightgown and has his way with her. <em>Without removing his suit of armor.<\/em> The film now launches into a truly disturbing montage of parallel action, Cornwall writhing in bloody agony even as Uther pounds against Igrayne in front of a roaring hellfire, composer Trevor Jones\u2019 surreal accompaniment of wailing vocals and low, undulating strings taking command of the soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>While the little girl watches.<\/p>\n<p>Talk about a weird way of being introduced to sex onscreen.<\/p>\n<p>(Katrine Boorman, who plays Igrayne in the film, is director Boorman\u2019s daughter, and that adds an extra layer of weirdness to the whole thing.)<\/p>\n<p>By the time I had actually <em>turned<\/em> 17, seeing R-rated movies was old hat; I\u2019d already seen my first R-rated movie on a date: <a title=\"Beverly Hills Cop\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=B52023&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Beverly Hills Cop<\/em><\/a>. The first R-rated movie I saw away from home (that is to say, first semester college)? <em><a title=\"Witness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D63301&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Witness<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I never quite recaptured that \u201cscandalous\u201d tingle again until I saw Peter Greenaway\u2019s NC-17 nutter of a film <em>The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover<\/em>, which was dirty and weird enough to make you feel like you were getting away with something just by watching it and not getting arrested. Still, as a fully legal adult (old enough to vote <em>and<\/em> old enough to drink), I felt it didn\u2019t pack the same emotional punch as\u00a0those first glimpses of cinema skin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/r_rated_movies\/rated-r-beverly-hills-cop-witness-cook-and-the-thief-poster\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37466\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37466\" alt=\"rated-r-beverly-hills-cop-witness-cook-and-the-thief-poster\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-beverly-hills-cop-witness-cook-and-the-thief-poster.jpg\" width=\"489\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-beverly-hills-cop-witness-cook-and-the-thief-poster.jpg 489w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/rated-r-beverly-hills-cop-witness-cook-and-the-thief-poster-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By that point, we already had the video rental business in full swing, making it far easier to obtain truly racy fare like <em>Pink Flamingos <\/em>and <em>Pieces, <\/em>not to mention actual pornography\u2014the viewing of which, frankly<em>, <\/em>also\u00a0didn\u2019t deliver the frisson that breaking that R barrier did for me so long ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/the-cook-the-thief-his-wife-and-her-lover-helen-mirren.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16372\" title=\"the-cook-the-thief-his-wife-and-her-lover-helen-mirren\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/the-cook-the-thief-his-wife-and-her-lover-helen-mirren.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/the-cook-the-thief-his-wife-and-her-lover-helen-mirren.jpg 500w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/the-cook-the-thief-his-wife-and-her-lover-helen-mirren-300x127.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>(UPDATED: Blog and ye shall receive!) <\/strong>So much for tales of my first R-rated movies. <\/em>The<em> first R-rated movie, 1968\u2019s <\/em><a title=\"The Split on DVD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D59749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Split<\/a><em>, starring <\/em><a title=\"Gene Hackman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/findresults_actor_smart.asp?search=Gene+Hackman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gene Hackman<\/a><em>, appears to be currently <del>unavailable\u00a0 <\/del>ready for you to order! The first film to ever receive an MPAA rating of any kind, <\/em><a title=\"Dracula Has Risen from the Grave\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/findresults_title_smart.asp?search=Dracula+Has+Risen+from+the+Grave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dracula Has Risen from the Grave<\/a><em>, remains a title movie-loving completists can easily add to their video libraries.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember your first R-rated movie?
