Everyone trying to handicap the Oscar races has their own thoughts as to why one movie may win out over another: artistic aspirations, social significance, &#8220;feel good&#8221; themes, the size of the buffet table at studio screenings, and so forth. Well, I&#8217;m no different, and I&#8217;d like to present my own very simple theory on the subject; Simply put,\u00a0The King&#8217;s Speech will take top honors due to its English setting.<\/p>\n<p>You see, in the Academy Awards&#8217; 83-year history, no less than 14 Best Picture winners have been\u00a0primarily set\u00a0or had key scenes in the United Kingdom. Chronologically, they are Cavalcade, <a title=\"Mutiny on the Bounty\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D49856&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mutiny on the Bounty<\/a>, <a title=\"Rebecca\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D15123&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rebecca<\/a>, <a title=\"How Green Was My Valley\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D16429&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">How Green Was My Valley<\/a>,\u00a0 <a title=\"Mrs. Miniver\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D49857&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mrs. Miniver<\/a>, <a title=\"Around the World in 80 Days\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D61186&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Around the World in 80 Days<\/a>, Tom Jones, <a title=\"My Fair Lady\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D29147&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">My Fair Lady<\/a>, <a title=\"A Man for All Seasons\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D35204&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">A Man for All Seasons<\/a>, <a title=\"Oliver!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D12421&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Oliver!<\/a>, <a title=\"Chariots of Fire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D11156&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chariots of Fire<\/a>, <a title=\"Braveheart\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D17840&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Braveheart<\/a>, <a title=\"Titanic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D08476&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Titanic<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Shakespeare in Love\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D16171&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shakespeare in Love<\/a> (but not, curiously, <a title=\"The English Patient\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D61218&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The English Patient<\/a>). Why the infatuation with America&#8217;s former mother country? It could just be that the Oscars have traditionally marked Hollywood&#8217;s attempt to elevate its product to the rarefied level of fine art, and to our untrained ears few things sound more artistic and sophisticated that an English accent. Heck, they even gave the 1948 award to a movie that was filled with English accents but set in Denmark, Laurence Olivier&#8217;s adaptation of <a title=\"Hamlet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D17934&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hamlet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Broadway-Melody-The.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13825\" title=\"Broadway Melody, The\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Broadway-Melody-The-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Broadway-Melody-The-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Broadway-Melody-The.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Annie-Hall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13826\" title=\"Annie Hall\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Annie-Hall-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Annie-Hall-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Annie-Hall.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a>Does this mean there&#8217;s no Oscar love for domestically-based projects? Quite the contrary. Britain&#8217;s\u00a0tally is actually second to the city so nice they named it twice, New York, New York. It sure seems as though a lot of actors, writers, and directors out in Hollywood get nostalgic for their\u00a0East Coast beginnings. One might think that that this would give a boost to the chances for the Gotham-based ballet drama\u00a0Black Swan, but, interestingly, no New York-set film has taken home the Best Picture award since Kramer in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>Third place in the locale list also sits across the pond. Four\u00a0movies with primarily French settings&#8211;<a title=\"Wings\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D41068&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Wings<\/a>, <a title=\"The Life of Emile Zola\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D62031&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Life of Emile Zola<\/a>, <a title=\"An American in Paris\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D13766&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">An American in Paris<\/a>, and <a title=\"Gigi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D13768&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gigi<\/a>, along with the partly Gallic <a title=\"All Quiet on the Western Front\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D13227&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">All Quiet on the Western Front<\/a> and the aforementioned Chariots of Fire&#8211;have come away with Hollywood&#8217;s top prize. Meanwhile, locals here in southeastern Pennsylvania\u00a0must content themselves with a single Philadelphia-flavored winner, 1976&#8217;s\u00a0Rocky. Oh, and call it modesty, self-loathing or\u00a0what have you, but there&#8217;s never been a Best Picture\u00a0that had Hollywood as its main milieu (<em>Editor&#8217;s Note: This article was, of course written before 2012&#8217;s top prize went to <a title=\"The Artist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D34060&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">The Artist<\/a><\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>With all this in mind, the Harvard- and Silicon Valley-set Social Network could well\u00a0need the help of all its &#8220;friends&#8221; if\u00a0director David Fincher&#8217;s Web-based biodrama is to stand a chance of taking the Oscar crown away from King George VI.
