Maybe in excess of 10 times. I know someone who paid full price for <em><a title=\"Superman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=B85014&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Superman<\/a><\/em> over 20 times during its original theatrical run. (See if you agree with us about <a title=\"Top 10 Comic Book Movies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/movie-buzz\/top-10-comic-book-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\">its status in the comic movies pantheon<\/a>) I was too young then to see movies over and over on my own, and my parents would have never indulged me had I wished to take things to those extremes.<\/p>\n<p>I bring up the subject of repeat viewings because the topic came to mind as I prepared to go back to Pandora for <a title=\"Avatar (Extended Cut) on DVD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D08786\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Avatar: Special Edition<\/em><\/a>\u2014now with a whopping <em>nine extra minutes<\/em>. I was about to shell out considerable coin to see it in 3-D IMAX again as a favor to a friend who had missed it the first time around. <em>Avatar<\/em> sat somewhere in the middle of my \u201cTop 10 of the Year,\u201d but as the\u00a0hour drew near to make that big investment of time, a nagging thought came: <em>Am I too old and disinterested for these repeat viewings?<!--more--><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a kid, I found it utterly odd my parents weren\u2019t down with that whole watching the same movie again and again <em>and again<\/em> thing. We had that futuristic \u201ccable,\u201d so I could enjoy multiple viewings of movies I loved. There was <em>Murder by Death<\/em>, the goofy spoof of whodunits; and <em>The Spy Who Loved Me<\/em>, the film that got me instantly hooked on the James Bond franchise (see <a title=\"Nobody Does Bond Better, Part 1: The Connery Craze\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/staff-notes\/nobody-does-bond-better-whos-the-best-james-bond\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a title=\"Nobody Does Bond Better, Part 2: A Model Bond\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/staff-notes\/nobody-does-bond-better-002-george-lazenby-a-model-bond\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a title=\"Nobody Does Bond Better, Part 3: Moore, Roger Moore\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/staff-notes\/nobody-does-bond-better-003-moore-roger-moore\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for the in-progress proof). Not that they would <em>never<\/em> watch a movie more than once\u2014<em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em> was a yearly ritual in our house as it was in homes across the nation\u2014but as I recall, they saw little reason to revisit most movies. And while I felt that eerie kinship with my parents we all feel at a certain age, I soon realized that you can\u2019t ever totally get rid of that\u00a0habit when you\u2019re a movie lover.\u00a0In fact, there are\u00a0many categories that define the desire, need, or obligation to see a film more than once. It was four times for me with David Cronenberg\u2019s grotesque, touching remake of <em>The Fly<\/em>. In years past, I put <em>Eraserhead<\/em> to use in this category. I would test potential girlfriends with it. Love it? You\u2019re <em>awesome<\/em>. Hate it? Well, you\u2019re still awesome, but I need to do some work here.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m bound to be headed back to the theater to take someone\u2014anyone\u2014to see Robert Rodriguez\u2019 outrageous <em>Machete<\/em>, a film my former college roommate properly declared was like \u201cmale crack\u201d in which \u201cyou can feel the sweat pouring through every frame.\u201d The movie is jaw-droppingly violent, filled with gratuitous nudity, and bursting with politically volatile satire. Arnold Schwarzenegger\u00a0lives large in this category. My favorite of his films to put on repeat rotation is <a title=\"Total Recall\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=B75020&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Total Recall<\/a>. I\u2019ll serve up the Bill Duke drug thriller <em>Deep Cover <\/em>for the music of the dialogue, made into hip and vulgar poetry by Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum. I use <a title=\"The Complete Thin Man Collection\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D74298&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Complete Thin Man Collection<\/a> a lot for this purpose, but I never fail to stop what I\u2019m doing when Nicky Jr. forces his dad to gulp down a glass of milk in <em>Shadow of the Thin Man<\/em>. Releases of TV favorites offer perfect opportunities for low-impact repeat viewing. Like everyone else in the galaxy, I was curious to see what the \u201cSpecial Editions\u201d of the<em> Star Wars<\/em> trilogy were going to be like. My disappointment\u00a0ran so deep I decided\u00a0I wouldn\u2019t bother owning the films again until the original cuts were restored and released. Guess I\u2019ll be waiting a long time. Hope my laserdiscs hold out!<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Lord of the Rings <\/em>saga was a different story, with the theatrical release of Jackson\u2019s \u201cextended\u201d versions of the already lengthy fantasy films well worth attending to see entire story beats from the books left out of the initial releases. As for Friedkin\u2019s unfortunate recut of the great <em>The Exorcist<\/em>, called \u201cThe Version You\u2019ve Never Seen,\u201d I\u2019ll just say\u2014I wish.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the <em>Metropolis<\/em><strong> <\/strong>restoration at New York\u2019s Film Forum some years back, and I\u2019ll definitely be looking at the newest version (containing much previously \u201clost\u201d footage) on disc. The much-ballyhooed restoration of <em>Lawrence of Arabia<\/em><strong> <\/strong>many years ago remains one of the great moviegoing experiences of my life.<\/p>\n<p>Ridley Scott\u2019s <em>Blade Runner <\/em>has been restored, recut, and reconfigured multiple times. I\u2019ve lost track since I saw the first do-over that dispensed with Harrison Ford\u2019s voiceover. Spielberg\u2019s radical reworking of the <em>Close Encounters of the Third Kind<\/em> climax was fascinating, but his digital \u201ccorrective\u201d measures on <em>E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial<\/em>\u2014replacing federal agents\u2019 guns with kid-friendly walkie-talkies\u2014really takes this practice a step too far, and has kept me away from it since. I\u2019ve not seen Coppola\u2019s reworking of the <em>Godfather<\/em> films, but I did sit through <a title=\"Apocalypse Now Redux\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=D28009&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Apocalypse Now Redux<\/em><\/a>. Who wouldn\u2019t love bonus footage of Brando? A while back, I surveyed something along these same lines with <a title=\"Desert Island Movies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/staff-notes\/desert-island-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Desert Island Movies<\/a>. Maybe you could call this Security Blanket Cinema. For me, it\u2019s the Universal horror films from the 1930s and the Tarzan pictures from Weissmuller to Mike Henry. The Kirk-Spock <a title=\"Star Trek\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/product.asp?sku=B51268&amp;loc=buzzsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Star Trek<\/a> adventures also serve me well here, though I\u2019ve seen the movies enough times now that these can easily morph into the \u201cbackground noise\u201d category. These are the movies that, over time, you think are part of who you are. Something richer. Something surprising. You change, and they change with you. They continue to teach you important lessons, sometimes not just about the art of the movies. <em>Citizen Kane, The King of Comedy, Schindler\u2019s List, <\/em><em>Prick<\/em> <em>Up Your Ears<\/em>, <em>Amadeus,<\/em> and <a title=\"Wings of Desire on DVD &amp; Blu-ray\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/siteSearch.asp?search=wings%20of%20desire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Wings of Desire<\/em> <\/a>are some of these films I find myself using for this purpose. <em>My Dinner with Andre<\/em> is\u00a0a special example of this kind of required repeat viewing (and I talked about\u00a0my experiences with that film <a title=\"Talking Pictures, My Dinner with Andre\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/staff-notes\/my-dinner-with-andre\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026<em>Avatar<\/em>? I found myself immersed in its wonders all over again. Yes, time feels more precious these days, and I\u2019m more eager to see a new film for the first time onscreen or on video than to \u201clook back.\u201d But, great and ambitious movies are as enduring over time as the paintings, sculptures, or musical compositions of past artistic masters, and have a way of compelling our return.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You know someone\u2014or at least you know someone who knows someone\u2014who saw a movie in the theater in excess of two times.
