The novel by Richard Jessup, on which the film is based, is great.

Great film. The chemistry between McQueen and Robinson was more than what the story showed. It was Robinson saying goodbye as a beloved tough-guy with class and McQueen hitting on all cylinders at the peak of his career. I wish these two had done more films together.

If you like "The Cincinnati Kid" and you'd care to see something a little more raw and gritty, check out director Karel Reisz's "The Gambler," a 1974 offering that stars James Caan, with Paul Sorvino and Lauren Hutton. The vastly underappreciated Caan plays a complex, articulate compulsive bettor who's able to explain, although never justify, his repeated plunges into the ruthless netherworld of illegal gambling. That makes for a much more interesting character study.

Other than watching Edward G. Robinson in action, I've never cared much for the Cincinnati Kid. For the most part, it just lacks luster. The Man with the Golden Arm with Sinatra playing a junky dealer is a darker and more gritty street-level look at the gambling world of less-than-big-time gamblers and hustlers. A much better film about the game of poker is A Big Hand for a Little Lady with an even more high-powered cast.

The Cincinatti Kid has always been one of my favorite movies. To me the best scenes are the ones where McQueen plays coin toss with kids on the streets of New Orleans. Is there a better line in all of movies that "Come on Cincinatti, just one more time." That line says it all when it comes to what the movie is about what gambling is all about.
