Where Are They Now?: June Lockhart

Guest blogger David Lobosco writes:

I am not an animal lover, but one of my favorite reruns I watched growing up was Lassie. Actress June Lockhart was one of the best things about the corny black and white show. She came from a long acting family, and her mark she left on television should not be underestimated.

Born in New York City in 1925, Lockhart is the daughter of Canadian-born actor Gene Lockhart, who came to prominence on Broadway in 1933 in Ah, Wilderness!, and English-born actress Kathleen Arthur Lockhart. In 1948, Lockhart won a Tony Award for Outstanding Performance by a Newcomer (a category that no longer exists) for her role on Broadway in For Love or Money. In the late 1950s, she guest starred in several popular television Westerns, including Wagon Train and Cimarron City on NBC and Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, and Rawhide on CBS.

Lockhart is best known for her roles as TV mothers, first as Ruth Martin, the wife of Paul Martin (portrayed by Hugh Reilly), and the mother of Timmy Martin (played by Jon Provost) in the 1954 CBS series, Lassie (a role that she played from 1958–64). She replaced actress Cloris Leachman. Lockhart then became Dr. Maureen Robinson, the wife of Professor John Robinson (portrayed by Zorro actor Guy Williams) in the Lost in Space (1965–68) series. The popular science fiction program on CBS was remembered for, among other things, the design of its sleek silver spacesuits, which Lockhart wore in many publicity photos.

Lockhart appeared as Dr. Janet Craig on the CBS sitcom Petticoat Junction, after Bea Benaderet died during the run of the show, and as a regular in the ABC soap opera General Hospital during the 1980s and '90s. She provided the voice of Martha Day, the lead character in the mid-'70s Hanna-Barbara animated series These Are the Days. Lockhart was the only actor or actress to have starred in three hit series during the '60s.

In 1986, she appeared in the fantasy film, Troll. The younger version of her character in that film was played by her daughter, Anne Lockhart. They had previously played the same woman at two different ages in a 1981 episode of the action series Magnum, P.I.. In 1991, Lockhart appeared as Miss Wiltrout, Michelle Tanner's kindergarten teacher, on the sitcom Full House. She also had a cameo in the 1998 film Lost in Space, based on the series she had starred in 30 years earlier. In 2002, she appeared in two episodes of The Drew Carey Show as Lewis's mother, Misty Kiniski.

In 2004, she voiced the role of Grandma Emma Fowler in Focus on the Family's The Last Chance Detectives audio cases. Lockhart starred as James Caan's mother in an episode of Las Vegas in 2004. Lockhart has since guest starred on episodes of Cold Case and Grey's Anatomy, in the 2007 ABC Family film Holiday in Handcuffs, and in the 2007 feature film Wesley. Now at the age of 86, June Lockhart is still a beauty that appears from time to time not only in television but films as well...

I always loved June Lockhart, too, but I liked the Lassie series starring Tommy Rettig much better. I thought Tommy was a much better actor and more believable as the young son of a recently widowed mother who we all know was played by Jan Clayton.Jon was just too babyfied for me and I was really disappointed when all the actors were changed. The actor that played "Gramps" was wonderful and I was very saddened when he died. I thought it was wonderfully written into the script as well, and made this series the most heartwarming genre of that era...not too mushy.and perfect for the range of viewers during that time period. What has become of Tommy Rettig, anyway?By the way,June Lockhart also played in an old horror movie too..She was a werewolf or something at night and remembered nothing when morning came. I can't remember the name of it right now.I hope I am as beautiful as she is in 20 years when I will be her age she is now.

In 1995, June Lockhart participated in a "Lost in Space" Reunion on the Sci-Fi Channel, along with Billy Mumy, Jonathan Harris, and "The Robot."

It's available on the documentary DVD "The Fantasy Worlds of Irwin Allen" from Image Entertainment.

Loved her in Lost In Space - she was always very elegant as well as having a nurturing persona.

Check my blog out in the future for a profile of Tommy Rettig!

June was also in the 1939 film classic "A Christmas Carol" which to me, is the best version available and a must see at Christmas time. June protrayed one of Bob Cratchet's children and, of course, Bob Cratchet was played by her real life father, Gene Lockart.

So glad to hear that she's apparently doing well and still active. Thanks for all the good memories, June, and keep 'em coming!! All best.... Take good care of yourself!

She was also in an episode of Rosanne, It was an episode where a bunch of past tv moms show up I believe in a dream sequence...

To Jackie, Tommy Retig died a few years ago.

Actually Jackie, Tommy Rettig died in 1996. More than a few years ago, of a heart attack.

Also, her real life mother, Kathleen Lockhart, played Mrs. Cratchet.

In response to Jackie re June Lockhart in a werewolf movie. That was "She-Wolf of London," a Universal film from 1946. There was no werewolf, as June played a confused young woman who thinks she is the "werewolf" who is killing people in a park. The killer is another woman in the same house who uses a garden claw to maul the victims and who is planting evidence against June.

I met June a few years ago. Had a great time talking with her. Also got my picture taken with her.

I too liked "Lassie" with Tommy Rettig, Jan Clayton and George Cleveland as Gramps. I have read a little about Tommy Rettig and seem to recall that he had a few problems after the "Lassie" series. I had forgotten the year of his death but was aware he had left us. Like Brandon Cruz ("The Courtship of Eddie's Father") and Billy Gray ("Father Knows Best") to name just two, Tommy Rettig had a tough time adjusting after his television career ended.

You're all forgetting her role in "Meet Me in St. Louis". If I recall correctly, Judy Garland's character considered her a threat, and gave her a dance card with unappealing men.

  • Carol Williams

I've always loved June Lockhart. Not only was she in "Meet Me in St. Louis", she was in "All This and Heaven Too" with Bette Davis and Charles Boyer. She was beautiful even as a young teenage girl or pre-teen girl. She was in "Miss Annie Rooney" with Shirley Temple. She made an impression in whatever role she had. I loved her in her TV roles as well but she was always a "movie star" to me, and still is. She still is beautiful.

She was also the younger sister of Gary Coopers "Sgt. York" from 1941 and directed by Howard Hawkes.

Thank you for the update of an Awesome Woman and actress!!!

  • jim

    She is a great actress.

  • Char

June could play the lead role or supporting role but was always out in front and quite noticeable. She was quite a classy lady. She once played a very curt school principal in a made-for-tv movie with John Ritter. While her on-screen appearances were few in that vehicle, she made quite an impression.

  • Lorri

June also played the eldest daughter of Charles Boyer in the 1940 Bette Davis movie "All This And Heaven Too", although I first saw her in "Petticoat Junction". Great actress.

  • David in LA

June Lockart is one of the best actors working in television (and film)! Whatever the role, she always shines!

  • roger lynn

Lost in Space is still my favorite show of all time,,Ms Lockhart looks great still,,,what a grand actress,,

  • Jack

I had not connected her to Gene Lockhart until I saw the strong facial resemblance, then I realized they had to be related.

Thank-you to Gord, marxlover, and David . My husband died in 1996...I guess that explains why I lost track of the folks from the movie and TV world that died that year. I knew Brandon Cruz and Billie Gray had problems ,but somehow they just did not have the appeal and persona as really good actors in an endearing way (in my opinion) as Tommy.I appreciate you guys information.

Ah what memories Miss Lochart and "Lassie" brings back to me.
