Both "Maltese Falcon" and "Big Sleep" are classics (the 1946 version of "Sleep," not the flat remake 30 years later). A little noticed classic that deserves far more attention than it ever got is "Somewhere In The Night" with John Hodiak. The film was released on DVD but has since disappeared. Pity. Great noir! Another noir film with strong credentials is "Force of Evil" with John Garfield. What these films have in common is integrity. The characters decide the action, which is a far cry from today's comic-book films.

Love black and white, but it doesn't have to be that way to be film noir. Chinatown has all the elements and is probably in my top 10 of all time. It has more to do with the mood of the film than the cinematography.

I wish they had included "Pushover" instead of "The Big Heat" which has been available on DVD for years.

Don is absolutely right about "The Maltese Falcon" (probably the original film noir) but is he aware that Dwight Frye was in that? Does Dwight Frye? Is the irony not delicious? Mr. Frye you share an iconic name. Flies anyone?

I have a real love of film noir, and I am sure there are tons out there that I haven't seen, but for some reason I really love "The Big Sleep", even though I have seen it about 40 times, I still can't follow the plot line, but with Bogey and Bacall--who cares?

I find it interesting that there are so many film noir classics that you've totally ignored. One good example is THE MALTESE FALCON!
