She can be sour and sweet, sometimes simultaneously. A while back, I did a feature on the fabulous Jennifer Jason Leigh where I mentioned the film Crooked Hearts and how delighted I was to see Leigh co-starring alongside the inimitable Juliette Lewis, two of my favorite actresses. Well, after first covering Leigh, it’s now time that I give Lewis her due respect. Upon further reflection since first deciding to do this piece, I’ve come to the conclusion that there definitely hasn’t been and probably will never be an actress more deserving of coverage in this “unsung stars” feature than Lewis. Why did I come to this minor epiphany? When mentioning that I would be paying tribute to the impressive yet largely unrecognized career of Lewis in the office, a few of my esteemed colleagues took it upon themselves to voice their disdain for the lithe thespian. One of these opinionated gentlemen—who will remain nameless—stated that she’s “a completely annoying screen presence,” specifically citing her role in the remake of Cape Fear as an example. The other, rather caustic, co-worker even went so far as to call her a “skank.” While that is perhaps not the kindest term to use when discussing a young lady, his argument wasn’t lost on me. It seems that Miss Lewis is a completely polarizing figure. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Fortunately, I have my own voice on this quaint little website, and hearing these base criticisms only solidified my resolve to come to the lovely lady’s defense.

Remember the movie, PCU? No, Jennifer Jason Leigh isn’t in the film. It’s a college comedy starring Jeremy Piven and Jon Favreau as campus clowns battling the politically correct tone that has taken over their university… but I digress. Anyway, in the film there’s a character named Pigman (played by Jody Racicot) who’s doing his thesis on the film careers of Gene Hackman and Michael Caine, due to their abundance of great work. During PCU’s climax, Pigman comes across A Bridge Too Far, a movie featuring both Hackman and Caine to which Pigman triumphantly exclaims that this pairing is the crux of his thesis. The reason I bring up this little film tidbit is that I recently had my own personal “Pigman moment” when I happened upon the title Crooked Hearts co-starring two of my favorite actresses, Juliette Lewis and the aforementioned Leigh. Now, in a future installment I will happily detail the career of the powerhouse that is Lewis, but this time I’m going to delve into the incredible talent of the illustrious Leigh.

While he’s rarely been cast as a leading man throughout his career, the somewhat odd and off-the-wall thespian known as Crispin Glover is proof positive that there’s no such thing as a small part. Additionally, the talented actor refreshingly makes it known that it’s possible to carve one’s own path in Hollywood without necessarily having to tow the line of the status quo (even though, it’s admittedly not a feat that’s commonplace). Many people may recall Glover first bursting into their consciousness as Michael J. Fox’s (initially) spineless father, George McFly, in the blockbuster hit Back To The Future, and for good reason. Complete with his unique and lilting voice, Glover almost steals the classic time-travel comedy as a frail man pestered by the town bully. After all, who hasn’t uttered the classic line, “Hey you! Get your damn hands off her!” more than a few times? (Incidentally, Glover single-handedly changed Screen Actors Guild laws when he sued producers for illegally using his likeness in the sequel and won). However, Glover has plenty of great roles on his resume and he needs to receive his due credit.

Many people may know who she is, but Selma Blair rarely seems to get mentioned in the media as the truly talented and versatile actress that she is. Whether it’s because many of her films are off the radar, or that Blair somehow just bewilderingly gets lost in the throng of actresses stampeding through Hollywood is tough to decipher, but it’s about time she at least gets some much deserved attention here.

Sure, she may not be a household name, and while she does have plenty of fine supporting roles on her resume, Molly Parker has managed to carve out a career as a primarily lead actress, and an incredible one at that. Sadly, Parker has never really gotten the credit she deserves… until now.
Perhaps the first film example that proves Parker not only has chops, isn’t afraid to take chances with lurid subject matter and is also capable of instilling respectable human qualities into flawed characters is the movie that put her on the map. Parker teamed with director Lynne Stopkewich for the film Kissed, a stark tale about a young woman’s complete obsession with death that eventually evolves into necrophilia. Obviously, this is material that’s extremely delicate to say the least and doesn’t lend itself to positive feelings for viewers. However, Parker handles the role with immense sensitivity, and despite the alternative and distasteful lifestyle of someone who engages in such an act, viewers may be amazed by the amount of empathy and understanding they have for the character.
