Some road movies such as the Hope/Crosby films, It Happened One Night, The Grapes of Wrath, Easy Rider, and more recently, Thelma and Louise and Little Miss Sunshine are both critically acclaimed and immensely popular to this day. We’ve decided to divert from the well known avenues of these films, opting instead to travel off the beaten path with the ones listed below. Naturally, you may have previously passed through some of these byways, but hopefully some will lead you down unfamiliar trails that will become favorites of yours as well. Enjoy the trip!
A lot of people will tell you that the even-numbered Star Trek films are fantastic while the odd-numbered entries are nearly unwatchable pieces of junk. For many, none of the movies perpetuate that myth more than Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. So, was it really that bad?
A decade ago, Star Wars geeks (myself included) and casual fans alike flocked to movie theaters around the world to view one of the most eagerly anticipated films in the history of cinema, Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Many (again, myself included) left scratching their heads over what they'd just seen. So what went wrong? And, more importantly, what could have been done to fix it?
Hollywood loves remakes these days. I have a theory that, at some point, we'll see every remotely popular film made between 1960 and 1990 reworked for modern audiences. The best we can hope for is that the filmmakers and performers behind these "re-imaginations" and "re-inventions" are qualified to take a stab at some of our old favorites. From "Freaks and Geeks" to "Funny People," writer/director Judd Apatow has demonstrated a unique comedic sensibility that seamlessly blends raunch with heart and fully realized, robust characters, making him the perfect choice to have a go at Richard Hooker's novel. Here, I take a look at what it might be like if Apatow and his merry band of regulars inhabited the 4077th.
