08.19.09 Deja View: More Movie Poster Lookalikes

Here are more “poster doppelgangers” that confirm to movie fans like yourself that, yes, you have seen that poster before!
I've tried to keep the obvious low budget rip-offs of famous movie one-sheets and parody posters to a minimum. Lazy marketing strategies and sheer lack of imagination are to blame for the following lame efforts.

08.18.09 Film Geeks Unite! Behind Steven Soderbergh’s Widescreen Beef

Jaws

Pan-and-scanning widescreen images—still?!?—in the era of hi-def, widescreen television? You betcha. Check out what director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11-13, Out of Sight) has to say about this absurdity (especially as it relates to Jaws) in an interview appearing in the DGA Quarterly (this is a link to the Google cache as the DGA servers were down, scroll towards the bottom!).

Too esoteric a complaint? Not for “real” film lovers, and not for those who appreciate that the director and DP mean what they mean when they compose their frames.

08.14.09 Aviva Kempner & Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg

She wrote, produced and starred in her own television situation comedy. She won the first Emmy for Best Actress in a comedy series. She was one of early TV’s pioneers, a feminist before feminism became fashionable or was even a word.

And her name was not Lucille Ball.

In fact, her name was Gertrude Berg. Doesn’t ring a bell? We’re not surprised.

Despite all of her amazing efforts in television and, earlier, radio, Gertrude Berg has remained a lost woman, unknown to generations of TV watchers.

08.14.09 Role Reversal Films

17 AgainThe recent release of 17 Again on DVD got me thinking about the many variations of the role reversal theme in movies. Akin to 17 Again, where Matthew Perry regresses to his younger self, there is Peggy Sue Got Married in which a grown woman is thrown back in time and gets to re-examine the choices she made in her life. Then there’s Big and 13 Going on 30, where the lead characters both age into their future selves and have to cope with adult issues.

08.13.09 Total Drama Island: TV’s Most Animated Reality Series

total-drama-island1

So, you say you're tired of the same old backstabbing routines on Survivor, you've never bought an album from an American Idol winner, you don't want to see any more teams of  yuppies or busty blondes on The Amazing Race, and you won't stoop so low as to sit through an episode of Big Brother? Well, Bunkie, what if I told you there was a reality competition show on TV that was genuinely fun to watch, one that featured a unique setting and challenges, lots of laughs, a little romance, and interesting contestants with three-dimensional personalities? And what if I told you it was an animated cartoon?

08.11.09 Dr. Strangefilm Case #003: Bill and Coo

Bill-And-Coo

Say what you will about the Academy Awards--and a lot has certainly been said over their 80-plus year history--but by and large they have done a fairly good job of honoring the best talent that Tinseltown has presented on the screen. Oh, sure, there have been overlooked stars from Marilyn Monroe and Richard Burton to John Travolta and Johnny Depp, but most of the biggest names have taken at least one Oscar home: Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Sean Penn, Bill and Coo, Kate Winslet...

08.07.09 Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne & Adam

Although the movie is called Adam, it is not a film about the first man on earth.

Rather, the film is focused on a man with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism.

Further, it’s a romantic dramedy to boot. Not your typical Hollywood product—indie or otherwise. While this subject could warrant a sappy, manipulative Lifetime cable movie or a Rain Man redux, Adam delivers in a fresh and winning way.

08.05.09 Yeah Yeah Yeah…Wow! Marvel’s 70th (and Japanese Spider-Man!)

Listen up, true believers!

When it comes to comic books (or comic book movies), is your motto “Make Mine Marvel”? If so, you may already know that the comics empire that brought the world such snappy, dazzlin', mighty men (and women) of fantasy such as Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four, Dr. Strange, and countless others just turned 70 years young. No doubt there's a bash to mark the occasion brewing at a comics shop near you.
